LW-Summer 2021 Hip Replacement Story

With his left hip and knee aching and all his recreational activities curtailed, Scott Shuster made one of the best choices in his life. He sought a second opinion for possible medical treatment. That decision led the retired Marine Corps officer to reject a questionable knee surgery for a hip replacement that has turned his life around.

“I wasn’t happy with my consultation with the first orthopedic surgeon, so I went back to my primary care doctor and asked for an alternative,” says Shuster, 55. “That’s how we came up with the idea to get a second opinion at UCI Medical Center. It’s been a very positive experience.”

Corinne Shuster says her husband is no longer hunched over and shuffling when he walks. “He’s like a different person. He can climb the stairs. He can get down on the floor to play with his grandkids. And he can sleep without pain.”

Patients seeking help for joint pain from UCI Health experts can expect a thorough, unbiased evaluation and recommendations that include state-of-the-art technologies and treatments, says Dr. Steven Yang, the UCI Health surgeon who fixed Shuster’s painful left hip in December.

    About the Experience

Comments: Dr. Yang changed my life! I had significant issues with my knees due not only to the way they developed but also to a surgery when I was a teen that then led to many more issues and many more surgeries in adulthood. As a result, I had to have both knees replaced and picked Dr. Yang to do them. He fit my criteria…old enough to have significant experience doing the surgery but young enough to still be incorporating the latest techniques, and associated with a university hospital to have access to them. The first replacement was a more complicated surgery due to the bone deformity and was a tough recovery. The second was a straightforward surgery with an easy recovery. Dr. Yang was a rockstar for both of them! For my first knee, he always offered realistic assessments of my likelihood for regaining normal range of motion and made a quick decision to intervene with a manipulation early in my recovery. He also supported the physical therapy required to get the range of motion that I wanted. He definitely cared about my outcome, which is not my experience with all orthopedic surgeons. Because of him, my knees are significantly more functional than they have been in years, and I am enjoying my life again! I would highly recommend Dr. Yang to anyone who has to have a knee replacement!
